Chaos Creation

Creating From Chaos

Saturdays are kind of my trippy days.  I seem to be more connected to esoteric streams of thought.  Early this morning I read this tweet from Marianne Williamson:

“@marwilliamson: Chaos is a veil in front of a truer truth. Extend your perception beyond what your eyes perceive, to what in your heart you know to be true.”

I have some sincere respect for Marianne Williamson but she is really off base here.  Chaos is not a veil.  That statement implies that chaos is something standing in the way of truth; something that is deceitful; something that can be lifted, seen through or torn.  She couldn’t be more wrong and has demonized a creative energy that doesn’t resonate with hers.

Chaos is a force, a powerful energy.  The very universe in which we exist was born from chaos.  To ignore chaos is to avoid creation.

An artist sits down to create from a blank canvas, brushes, paint, and their vision.  Before they apply their vision and talent to the medium and tools, it is nothing but chaos.  Engineers create from raw materials and form bridges, buildings, and highways.  The blogger, author and poet sit before a blank screen with thoughts and ideas swirling in their heads.  They create stories from thoughts and words that have no meaning until they mold the chaos into form.  Most of what you see around you would not exist had it not been birthed from chaos.

I am one of those people who thrives in chaos.  The more chaos around me the better.  I approach the mayhem as a project.  Every little bit of that chaos is another piece of something that has yet to be formed into something beautiful or functional from my thoughts and work.  It’s a part waiting to be made into a whole.  When the car breaks down, the web host totally effs up my database, a client comes to me with a problem, or the universe just generally seems to have placed a pile of shit before me, I excel.  I don’t get frazzled.  I look at the elements of the chaos and form something new, resolve a problem, or create a plan.

Because I was made to create from chaos the universe throws more of it at me.  The universe wants to expand so it gives me the elements I need to create.

I also know that for people like me who create from chaos, that it is very easy to fall into the trap of intentionally creating chaos.  Things get boring and lackluster and you need to create something.  You need to feed the beast.  Don’t do it.  That is unhealthy and potentially harmful to others.  Keep yourself in check.  Did you create the chaos or did it present itself to you?

I also realize that a lot of folks fear chaos.  It is a very unstable energy to wield.  It cannot be mastered but it can be shaped. It’s very unpredictable. Not everyone should mess around with chaos energy but you should not avoid or demonize it either.  You may just need some help from someone who can work with it.

Everyone surrounds themselves with and works with different kinds of energy.  I am comfortable with and thrive in chaos.  We are all creators and we each create from different energies. What energy vibes with you and drives you to create?  How does it present itself to you?  What are you creating?

    Nice post!

I get what you’re saying and sometimes wonder if it’s how we’re raised?

My sister constantly creates Chaos in her house. I find things are always very tense over there. It stresses me out!

I think she might have got that from my mother.

Hmmm.. I guess it could be. My mom was pretty laid back but my dad was always busy. When he retired, he didn’t retire he just worked on his own projects.

I used to create the chaos and that made it very tense. Now I just wait for it to come to me and have to learn to deal with down time. I had to teach myself that it was okay to not be working constantly.

So maybe it is a nature and nurture thing. And with all things moderation.

    Thanks for the comment.

    What a fabulous post, Georgia!

The danger with reading stuff like Marianne – whose stuff I also sincerely admire, by the way – is that, because she has “guru status” everything she says must be deep, meaningful and… true.

But I’m with you. Actually, I have to have chaos, or there is no creativity. Yes, that means I sometimes invent it in order to enjoy grappling for clarity, and yes, that can sometimes be to my extreme detriment. Still, I think as I get older I am wising up to the difference. What I’ve found, however, is that now I’m allowing myself to write, I am much more likely to create that chaos in my work, whereas I used to create it in other part of my life. In other words, it seems to be more powerfully channeled now.

    Hope that all makes sense!?

You make total sense. It’s okay to create chaos if you can handle it. But, I used to create it in ways that were more destructive and creative.

I too will create chaos to keep me buzzing. I do that with projects. If I don’t have enough to do I’ll start new projects. The mistake I’ve made in the past with this process is to overextend myself with time and money.

I think the danger lies in creating chaos that brings in other people or effects other people that can’t deal with it. It’s the people factor that can add unnecessary stress and do damage.

I guess we are really talking about controlled chaos, but that’s kind of an oxymoron. :-) Thanks for the thought provoking post.

There is chaos and then there are “crazy makers”. Chaos is part of the whole and some us live there, love there, create there and frankly thrive there.

Crazy making is a different beast who sucks us all dry and serves only the crazy maker who lives in that world.

Great post and on the mark for those who dream a dream or two in chaos!!

    kind regards
